Perlite is a lightweight organic mineral of porous granules used in container soil mixes for enhancing the retention of moisture and air. Perlite is also used as a medium for seed planting and root cutting.

Soil Mixes
To use Perlite in a soil mix, incorporate 1/3 Perlite to 2/3 soil. The rate of application will vary depending on how compacted or heavy the soil is. Heavy clay soils will take a larger percentage of Perlite than sandy loam soils.

Seed Starting

• Select a clean seed flat, tray or pot and fill with Perlite and moisten with lukewarm water.
• Sow Seeds directly into the Perlite per seed packet recommendations.
• Place the flat, tray or pot in a warm, well-lit area and moisten frequently.
• Seedlings may be transplanted directly into the garden or a larger container when it has developed its second set of leaves or has attained a height of 4-6 inches.

Root Cuttings

• Select a clean seed flat, tray or pot and fill with perlite and moisten with lukewarm water.
• Take a 2-inch cutting from the parent plant and moisten the cut tip with water. Dip the cut end into a rooting hormone and plant the treated cut end into the prepared container.
• Place the container in a warm, well-lit area and moisten frequently. Within weeks, the cutting will develop roots of its own and will eventually require transplanting into a larger container.
